Marc Simont (1915-2013)

Illustrator extraordinaire Marc Simont died July 13, 2013, in Cornwall, Connecticut, at ninety-seven. Three of his picture books received Caldecott recognition — the 1957 Medal for A Tree Is Nice (text by Janice May Udry); 1950 and 2002 Honors for The Happy Day (text by Ruth Krauss) and The Stray Dog — while many other books (he illustrated nearly one hundred) have achieved classic status, including Karla Kuskin’s The Philharmonic Gets Dressed and James Thurber’s The 13 Clocks.
