Carle Honors and Uri Shulevitz (1935–2025)

Look what came Out of the Box:

What a thrill to receive in the mail this gorgeous art from The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art:

Last fall we were co-honorees for the Carle Honors with Uri Shulevitz, who sadly passed away earlier this week. Shulevitz wasn’t in attendance, but he was beautifully represented by editor Wes Adams and by a violinist who played gorgeous classical and klezmer tunes. We were gifted this print of Shulevitz's art as a memento (shown on Bertha’s chair):

And this place setting sits on my desk:

More from the Horn Book by and about the Caldecott Medalist (in 1969 for The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship) and three-time honoree:

Elissa Gershowitz

Elissa Gershowitz is editor in chief of The Horn Book, Inc. She holds an MA from the Center for the Study of Children's Literature at Simmons University and a BA from Oberlin College.
