Jean Craighead George

Author and naturalist Jean Craighead George, a pioneer in nature writing for children, died on May 15, 2012, in Mount Kisco, New York, at the age of ninety-two. She authored over one hundred fiction and nonfiction children’s books, including the classic wilderness adventure novels My Side of the Mountain (a 1960 Newbery Honor book) and Julie of the Wolves (the 1973 Newbery Medal winner). Read her lively and relevant June 1959 Horn Book Magazine article "Summer and Children and Birds and Animals and Flowers and Trees and Bees and Books."

Barbara Herrgesell

Jean Craighead George has been one of my favorite authors since I became a children's librarian many years ago. I read all her books and biographies and passed them on to the children who came to the library. Copies of a bibliography of her books were out for children (and adults) to take. Even recently I introduced an elderly friend who is passionate about wolves to her books. Thank you for the notice and the long ago article. The books may be out of date now, but that is the way children learn!
