Welcome to the inaugural edition of Nonfiction Notes from the Horn Book, a quarterly supplement to our monthly e-newsletter Notes from the Horn Book. Each issue of Nonfiction Notes will contain brief reviews, taken from the Horn Book Guide, of new and recent informational books we think would be especially good for schools looking to dive into the Common Core State Standards. Arranged by subject headings also taken from the Horn Book Guide, these books are all distinguished by strong conceptual frameworks and/or points of view; they go beyond a just-the-facts approach to nonfiction reading. I believe the CCSS offer schools the encouragement to use independent-minded books to cultivate independent-minded students, and I hope Nonfiction Notes will be helpful in this endeavor.
