Welcome to the inaugural edition of
Nonfiction Notes from the Horn Book, a quarterly supplement to our monthly e-newsletter
Notes from the Horn Book. Each issue of
Nonfiction Notes will contain brief reviews, taken from the
Horn Book Guide, of new and recent informational books we think would be especially good for schools looking to dive into the
Common Core State Standards. Arranged by subject headings also taken from the
Horn Book Guide, these books are all distinguished by strong conceptual frameworks and/or points of view; they go beyond a just-the-facts approach to nonfiction reading. Find more resources
here, and please let us know how
Nonfiction Notes can be more useful at
newsletter@hbook.com. I believe the CCSS offer schools the encouragement to use independent-minded books to cultivate independent-minded students, and I hope
Nonfiction Notes will be helpful in this endeavor.
