Sydney Smith on Town Is by the Sea

schwartz_town is by the seaIn our March/April 2017 issue, our editors asked illustrator Sydney Smith about his illustrations for quiet new picture book Town Is by the Sea. Read the full starred review.

Horn Book Editors: The illustrations help pace the story so beautifully. How did this book come together among text, art, and design?

Sydney Smith: Joanne Schwartz’s text has a beautiful rhythm, and we knew that it would be best for the art to follow suit. The pacing was developed slowly and reshaped over and over until each part got its proper attention. I enjoy slowing down a story like this and allowing the readers moments to feel the significance of its many elements, like the sea, a coal mine underground, or just two cups of tea.
