Drest is determined to free her captured older brothers and father from Faintree Castle, where they soon will be hanged, and she means to use the young knight she rescued to do it. As she moves through the medieval Scottish landscape, her image of her family is challenged by the unsettling stories she hears about her father, known as the Mad Wolf. Narrated by Manning with a robust (but navigable) Scottish accent, this solid quest story of a fierce girl whips along quickly, with lots of well-rounded characters and room for a sequel.
