>"We Are All Winners"

>opined Karen Hesse in her Newbery-Medal acceptance speech (yeah, I know, easy for her to say) but I am stoked, not to mention contractually obligated, to announce the winners of Mother Reader's 48 Hour Book Challenge. The Most Books Read Prize goes to the Midwestern Lodestar blog, and the Most Time Spent Reading Prize to the blog Finding Wonderland.

Congratulations to you both. I remain unsure about why my mentioning these winners is supposed to be some kind of prize and have a sneaking suspicion MR is expecting me to make fun of their reading choices or something, but I would never do a thing like that where you could see me. Now shoo, earnest readers. Go outside and play.

>Stoked:
"a very strong emotion: atingle, excited, fired up, thrilled, worked up. Informal psyched. Slang turned-on." from Answers.com

Describes how I feel about reading, EXACTLY!

And this quote is apt:

"I just decided I'd hang at the back and hope a couple fell so I could nick a bronze. Then I saw them all go down. Maybe I'm not the most deserving guy, but I got the gold and I'm stoked about it."

Steve Bradbury, Australian speed skater, gold medal winner of the 1,000m short-track speed skating in the Winter Olympics,

And this from dear Emily D.:

"Success is counted sweetest by those who ne'er succeed;
To comprehend a nectar
Requires sorest need..."

And a question: Do speed readers and skim readers count in marathons like this? I can EASILY haul home 20 books a week from the library...but I do skim and I do speed and of the hours I take no heed....when a competition's run....what's the use if it ain't FUN?!!!

DON'T expect poetry from me either for three minutes worth of fiddling...

>Fo' shizzle Roger, you done good by me and the winners.

The prize value comes from everyone naming your blog as the the one they'd love to take to the prom in the blogger interviews at Seven Impossible Things. I figure today's post is the equivalent of putting a note in our blogger lockers.

The 'stoked' was just to make us giggle.

>We're just snickering at Mr. Sutton using the word 'stoked.' Our book choices are impeccable - although quite a few of us have the claim to fame of being a Bad Seed... sadly, I'm not Angel, though.

>I clicked on the links to see if any of the award-winning readers could be Angel, the little girl who won the summer reading contest when Roger was librarian at the Pulaski Branch in Chicago. Roger really had her number. Her name was Angel and she had long blonde hair, but Roger always referred to her as "The Bad Seed."
