Horn Book Reminiscences: Small, Important Tasks

In honor of our centennial, we asked interns from over the years to share their reminiscences.

After graduating with an English degree, I moved to Boston to take a publishing course. During my publishing program, I was able to intern at the Horn Book in the editorial department. Way back then in 2009, I knew I wanted to work with books and share important stories with young people.

Interning at the Horn Book introduced me to what an incredible community the world of children's books can be. Everyone I worked with was passionate, supportive, and inspiring. I remember being included in staff lunches with Roger and team, even as an intern, and that felt really special to me, because not every workplace is like that. Hearing the collaborative conversations and discourse among the team members helped me learn about the history of children's books, the current trends at the time, and what the future of children's books could be.

Though I was just an intern for a short time, everyone I worked with showed me the importance of truly loving what you do every day, and that even small tasks are an important part of the big picture. Speaking of small tasks, one habit that I can't shake is always putting three strips of tape on to close a box! That's something we did when sending books out to reviewers, and I do that to this day.

I'm forever grateful for my time at The Horn Book, and I've loved collaborating with them on school and library marketing teams ever since. The work the Horn Book does is so important, and I'm so glad to have been even just a small part of it.
