Betsy Bird (aka Fuse #8) weighs in on 2024 picture books with her annual list of Caldecott predictions.
We've been checking religiously for Fuse #8's predictions post, and today is the day! You know things are getting real when Betsy Bird presents her final (after spring and summer) predictions for Newbery and Caldecott winners. Her whole post is definitely worth a look; we will focus our attention on her Caldecott picks.
What a great list! There's such a variety of topics, artistic styles and media, moods, and themes. We have two books written and illustrated by Native creators. Two books focused on sibling dynamics. Two books that look at the meaning of home. One book that speaks to the very act of illustration itself. Each book distinct and worthy of attention by the Caldecott committee.
I'm pleased that our lists overlap — but not entirely. We've already covered two books: Being Home by Traci Sorrel, illus. by Michaela Goade and Joyful Song by Lesléa Newman, illus. by Susan Gal (Betsy quotes Shoshana's astute analysis of Gal's masterful use of white space). Posts about most of the other books are planned for the coming weeks. The one surprise, as Betsy says, is Chooch Helped by Andrea L. Rogers, illus. Rebecca Lee Kunz. I admit that book wasn't on our radar — we will try to weigh in on it for sure.
What do you think about Fuse #8's list? Is there anything you'd add? What are your predictions for the 2025 Caldecott?
