When Danny moves to Tempest, California, she falls in with a group of witches, the Grays, who need her to help bring back fellow witch Imogen from the mental vacancy she’s disappeared into. Amoss and Pressley take turns narrating, one playing the role of Danny and the other voicing chapters about the Grays, their high school classmates, and even the ravens and redwood trees of their small town. While the two readers’ voices are distinguishable — barely — their similarities of timbre and pitch, the text’s frequent flashbacks, and the large number of characters make it hard to keep track of what’s going on for the first third of the telling. Once listeners have fully entered into the story’s magical world, however, the excellent vocal acting, poetic descriptions, and steamy romance reward the effort needed to sort out the players.
