Publishers' Preview: Picture Books and Graphic Novels: Five Questions for Kat Leyh

This interview originally appeared in the November/December 2020 Horn Book Magazine as part of the Publishers’ Previews: Picture Books and Graphic Novels, an advertising supplement that allows participating publishers a chance to each highlight a book from its current list. They choose the books; we ask the questions.

When Snapdragon meets the local old-lady-witch, both are surprised at what they learn about each other.

1. Did you have a “witch” in your neighborhood growing up?

I moved around a lot, so I must have just missed her!

2. Ugh, the bookstore lady. Did young you ever get told your book choice was “inappropriate”?

I’m surprised and grateful I wasn’t ever told that. I loved to read and wanted to read everything in the library. So naturally I ended up with some books that were above my reading level.

3. What scary movie makes you cover your eyes?

I love scary movies, and I only ever look away if a scene is gory. Otherwise, bring on the ghosts!

4. Have you ever seen something science couldn’t explain?

In a house that I used to live in alone, I would find small piles of floor detritus around randomly. Like a sock, a bottle cap, some dust bunnies, and an old grape or something. It’s not unexplainable, but I can’t explain it.

5. If you could use magic for one aspect of book creation, which would that be?

Drawing already feels like magic sometimes, so I’d say I am using magic.
