Roger Talks with Molly Idle.
In the July/August 2013
Horn Book Magazine, reviewer Elissa Gershowitz asked
Flora and the Flamingo author/illustrator
Molly Idle where Flora gets her groove. Read the starred review
here.
Elissa Gershowitz: Is there music in your head to accompany the story? (I hear the Sugar Plum Fairy song.)
Molly Idle: I
love Tchaikovsky’s music — and
The Nutcracker Suite is one of my favorites! I’ve actually had a different movement from the
Nutcracker running through my head
as I’m choreographing the sketches for another Flora book. But the piece that plays in my head when I read
Flora and the Flamingo is Strauss’s
Blue Danube Waltz. The “
bum-bum, bum-bum” echoed in each refrain works just perfectly with the flipping of the flaps in this book.
