As April’s National Poetry Month approaches, I’ve been thinking about all that poetry can be and do, especially in a time of upheaval and turmoil. Jason Reynolds provides an achingly spare verse-novel recounting of (and reckoning with) the year 2020. National Youth Poet Laureate and inaugural poet Amanda Gorman “sings” of change. Rosemary Wells pays homage to classic A. A. Milne. The New Yorker’s poetry editor Kevin Young evokes the soothing balm of the natural world. And our own Shoshana Flax pens Parodies for Charities, making us laugh — and, yes, groan — all for a good cause.
