Bell’s 2014 graphic memoir is here re-issued with a wealth of “superpowered extras.” Childhood photos with friendly hand-lettered captions, often showing key items referenced in the memoir (stuffed companion Miss Bunn, the Phonic Ear) drive home the point that there are real people behind the book’s bunnies. Another section details the tale’s process from idea to book to fan art and Newbery Honor, with images including sketches and reference photos. The original itself is, as The Horn Book said (rev. 11/14), “exceptionally informative and entertaining”; this edition adds plenty to pore over for those with questions about bookmaking, cartooning, Deafness, or simply about El Deafo.
