What do you all do when you've finished one book and can't seem to settle on another? I finished Denise Mina's Conviction (started better than it got later, alas) and began Powers's The Overstory (it's too hot for that) and Philip Kerr's first Bernie Gunther book (inept metaphors) without either one getting its hook into me. Now, praise God, I am well into David Copperfield, the audiobook of which Amazon tells me I have listened to half, but I have no recollection of it at all and never otherwise read. This time I am reading it in large print on my Kindle and having a ball. Unlike the writers of the Brit detective series we love to watch, Dickens knows how to create a large cast of characters and keep each one distinct. The sentences do get long but they are rarely tangled and I'm always aware of the story moving forward. It's fun! I hope your reading is going as well.*

Another thing I read yesterday that you all should read is Claudia Rankine's essay about chatting up white men on airplanes to get their thoughts on privilege. I say without sarcasm that I would pay extra to sit next to Rankine on a plane--what a mind.
