National Library Week

It's National Library Week, the American Library Association's celebration of all things library. This year's theme is "Drawn to the Library" with honorary chairs Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud. Speaking of the team behind The Cartoonists Club (Graphix/Scholastic), their new Talks with Roger interview arrives in Horn Book newsletter subscriber inboxes today!

And speaking of the American Library Association, here are last year's Youth Media Awards speeches — the Newbery, Caldecott, Coretta Scott King Book Awards, and more — from the July/August 2024 Horn Book Magazine (cover by Vashti Harrison). We're just about to start working on the ALA Awards special issue for this year's winners (squee!).

Celebration days during National Library Week include [from ALA's website]:

  • Monday, April 7: Right to Read Day, a day for readers, advocates, and library lovers to take action to protect, defend, and celebrate the right to read. The American Library Association (ALA) kicks off National Library Week with the release of its State of America's Libraries Report, including the list of Top Ten Most Challenged Books of 2023.
  • Tuesday, April 8: National Library Workers Day, a day for library staff, users, administrators, and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers.
  • Wednesday, April 9: National Library Outreach Day (formerly National Bookmobile Day), a day to celebrate library outreach and the dedicated library professionals who are meeting their patrons where they are.
  • Thursday, April 10: Take Action for Libraries Day, a day to rally advocates to support libraries. Make sure to take one of these actions and then pass along ala.org/ShowUp to encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to act alongside you.

On Take Action for Libraries Day, we want to draw special attention to our sister publication School Library Journal's inquiry "How Will the IMLS Cuts Impact Your Library?" and the responses they received "The Cost of Losing IMLS Funding." Libraries need our support now more than ever, so show your appreciation for libraries during #NationalLibraryWeek and every day! Look for the hashtags #NationalLibraryWeek #ILoveLibraries and #ThankYouLibraries — and do thank your libraries, and your librarians (aka #LibrarianswithSuperpowers, including the newly elected ALA President for 2026–2027, Cambridge Public Library's own Dr. Maria McCauley).
