Interested in learning more about the children’s book industry, book reviewing, or how magazines and review journals operate? A Horn Book internship is a great place to start. We are currently accepting applications for Summer 2023 internships, which will likely include a combination of remote work and occasional in-person work in the Boston area.

Our editorial interns are an invaluable help in managing the gazillion (usually digital) books that enter and leave our virtual office. They unpack or upload books, format reviews, and enter books into our database — all while becoming familiar with publishing trends. They fact-check reviews, newsletters, and articles, and sometimes do some writing of their own. They take on oddball projects like poring over back issues to track down an old editorial. Oh, and sometimes they get free books.

We offer spring, summer, and fall internships. The next application deadline, for Summer 2023 internships, is April 14. Internships are paid ($15 per hour as of January 2023)  and are approximately fourteen hours per week. To apply, send a resume and cover letter to Monica de los Reyes (mdelosreyes at hbook dot com).

Meanwhile, meet our current editorial interns Sara and Julia, who have already been a huge help to us this spring! Every semester, we ask our interns to tell us a little about themselves. (Our ulterior motive: we want to chat with them about their favorite books!)

Sara Dowler

Education: I received my BA in English literature and writing from Ohio University, and I am currently working towards my MA in children’s literature at Simmons University.

Hometown: Columbus, Ohio

Interesting fact: I collect nutcrackers! If you count earrings, ornaments, and other knick-knacks I have nearly 40!

Favorite book(s): Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine has always been my go-to, but more recently I’ve been binge reading the comic series Lumberjanes (again) and I can’t stop telling people to go read The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon.

Favorite genre(s): Fantasy, magical realism, sci-fi.

Julia Ermi

Education: I graduated summa cum laude from Boston University with a BS in journalism. After I graduated, I completed the Columbia Publishing Course, a six-week certificate crash course in book and magazine publishing. I am currently applying for MFAs in creative writing.

Hometown: Bryn Mawr, PA

Interesting fact: I tried my hand at National Novel Writing Month for the first time in November 2022. I wrote about 30,000 words, which, despite falling short of NaNoWriMo's 50,000-word goal, is the most words I've ever written for a single project!

Favorite book(s): Percy Jackson and the Olympians will always hold the number one spot in my heart (my favorite of those is The Last Olympian), but I am recently (within the last five years or so) obsessed with Leigh Bardugo and V.E. Schwab. Particular favorites of theirs are the Shades of Magic series (Schwab) and the Alex Stern series (Bardugo).

Favorite genre(s): Young adult and new adult fantasy! You would be hard-pressed to get me to read anything else.
