Our editorial interns are an invaluable help in managing the gazillion books that enter and leave our office, and the gazillion digital books that enter and leave our virtual office. They unpack or upload books, format reviews, and enter books into our database — all while becoming familiar with publishing trends. They fact-check reviews, newsletters, and articles, and sometimes do some writing of their own. They take on oddball projects like poring over back issues to track down an old editorial. Oh, and they usually get free books.
We offer spring, summer, and fall internships. The next application deadline, for Spring 2023 internships, is November 1. Internships are paid ($15 per hour as of January 2023) and are approximately fourteen hours per week. To apply, send a resume and cover letter to Shoshana Flax (sflax at hbook dot com).

Meanwhile, meet our current editorial interns Lisa and Roshni, who have already been a huge help to us this fall! Every semester, we ask our interns to tell us a little about themselves. (Our ulterior motive: we want to chat with them about their favorite books!)
Education: I have a Bachelor of Science in business administration and a Master of Science in education — applied literacy. Currently I am working on my Master of Library and Information Science at Simmons University.
Hometown: Calais, ME
Interesting fact: While working for the Portland Public Library, I drove the bookmobile for approximately one year. We provided outreach services to neighborhoods and schools, attended local events, and generally had a fun time sharing books and library services with the community.
Favorite book(s): I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce, any books that include Elephant & Piggie by Mo Willems, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Moonlight over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool, Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, and so many more!
Favorite genre(s): Picture books with a twist and/or humor, realistic fiction, historical fiction, and memoir
Education: I got my Bachelor of Arts in English literature at Valdosta State University in Georgia, and right now I'm working on a Master of Arts in children's literature at Simmons University in Massachussetts.
Hometown: Newnan, GA
Interesting fact: Blue is my favorite color! It's the color of my bedspread, my Nintendo Switch, and a majority of my water bottles. BUT — I hate wearing the color blue. Go figure.
