Call for first-round nominations

Friends, we’ve looked at a number of extraordinary picture books so far, and much as we might enjoy giving each one a prize, Caldecott is looking for “the most distinguished.”

It’s time to make some choices.

The real Caldecott committee is beginning their nomination process, which you can learn more about in this excellent post Julie Hakim Azzam wrote last year. (Thanks, Julie!) Here, we’ll be doing nominations in two rounds, asking you for four nominations this month and three more in December. After each round, we’ll compile our nominations and post about where the group lands.

As you consider your options, keep in mind how Caldecott defines “distinguished”:

  • Marked by eminence and distinction; noted for significant achievement.

  • Marked by excellence in quality.

  • Marked by conspicuous excellence or eminence.

  • Individually distinct.

Please post your first four nominations in the comments to this post by Tuesday, November 12; we’ll post our compilation on Thursday, November 14.

We’re looking forward to some lively discussion!
