Internships
Interns perform a variety of duties,
most of which are clerical in nature. During the internship, interns
are encouraged to explore the extensive collection of children's
books in the office and ask many questions. Involvement with the
production of Horn Book publications and the accessibility of the
Horn Book staff provide an exceptional educational opportunity for
those with a specific interest in children's literature.
Interns posted with The Horn
Book Magazine and The Horn Book Guide assist with
managing incoming books, distributing books to reviewers, shelving
books in the office collection, filing reviews, maintaining the
Horn Book Guide database, researching paperback reprints
in back issues of the magazine, occasional light typing and proofreading,
mailing out complimentary issues, and querying publishers.
A design internship is also available and involves assisting Lolly Robinson (designer/webmaster) with design and scanning for the Horn Book Magazine, Horn Book Guide, newsletter, and website. Prior experience with Photoshop, InDesign, and Dreamweaver is useful, but not essential.
The Horn Book, Inc. offers internships
for the spring, summer, and fall terms. Hours may vary according
to the needs of the intern and Horn Book staff, but are generally
8 hours per week. Longer hours are considered on a case-by-case
basis for students who need them for school credit.
All Horn Book internships are unpaid.
Applicants should have a strong interest in children's literature
and should review at least one recent issue of The Horn Book
Magazine before applying. Cover letters and resume should be
e-mailed to Cynthia K. Ritter (critter at hbook.com)
or sent to her at The Horn Book, Inc., 56 Roland Street, Suite 200,
Boston, MA 02129.
Deadlines:
Spring term internships: November
15
Summer term internships: April 15
Fall term internships: July 15
