Letter to the Editor

Like Roger Sutton (“The Confounded Critic,” January/February Horn Book), I was somewhat bewildered but intrigued by Weetzie Bat when she hit the literary scene. I bought the first book, then the sequels, for my daughter, who was then fourteen years old. I also recommended them to likely readers in the schools and libraries where I worked. I didn’t get into too much detail when describing the books to parents and teachers — partly because the books were subversive and partly because they were difficult to describe.

Four years ago my daughter moved to Toronto from the West Coast to attend university, taking only the essentials with her. At that time her bookshelves held about 180 YA novels. They’re all still there, waiting for her return, except the Weetzie Bat books — they went to Toronto.
